Herb Profile - Cat's Claw

The scientific name for Cat's Claw is Uncaria Tomentosa. This woody vine, which has thorns shaped like a cat's claw - hence the name - grows in the rain forests of Peru. It can reach over 30 meters in length as it wends its way upwards through the trees.

Traditionally used by the Peruvian Indians to treat a wide range of ailments, including arthritis and cancer, findings from research into the medicinal properties of Cat's Claw have been impressive. So much so, that there has been a huge demand worldwide for the plant, which is now a protected species.

Health Benefits Of Cat's Claw

Studies have found that Cat's Claw has immune stimulating, anti-viral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and anti-microbial properties, and that it is able to increase the ability of white blood cells to destroy germs. Austrian researchers are using it to treat cancer and viral infections.

It has been found to contain an alkanoid which may help prevent thrombosis and stroke.

Cat's Claw is becoming very popular as a general immune system booster, and is especially good for helping prevent and reduce the duration and severity of a cold or flu.

Dosage

Cat's Claw can be taken as a capsule or tea. As a preventative, take 1 to 2 grams, or 1 to 2 cups of tea per day. Use 1 teabag or 1 to 2 tsp dried herb per cup, leaving the tea to stand for 5 to 10 minutes before drinking. The flavor can be hugely improved by adding blackcurrant and apple juice concentrate. To fight an infection, take up to 4 grams in capsule form, or drink Cat's Claw tea 4 times a day.

Caution

Always see a doctor if you have an infection you are concerned about, and do not stop taking prescribed medication without talking to your doctor first. Cat's Claw can be used alongside orthodox antibiotics and other medication.
