Supplement Profile - Pantothenic Acid

Also known as vitamin B5 or Panthenol, Pantothenic Acid is widely distributed through our tissues, in particular the liver, adrenal gland, heart and kidneys, hence the Greek name panthos, meaning everywhere. It ensures the smooth running of the adrenal gland (crucial for growth) and is involved in the formation of fatty acids ( good for the heart) and the release of energy from our food. The vitamin is widely available in food, but the best sources are liver, brewer's yeast, wheat, muesli and eggs. It's easily destroyed in cooking and processing, however, and excess alcohol intake and stress may increase your requirement for it. People suffering from rheumatoid arthritis have been found to have low levels.

Health Benefits Of Pantothenic Acid

Pantothenic Acid can help reduce the severity of rheumatoid arthritis. In one 1980 trial, taking large doses (500mg per day) of B5 for eight weeks reduced morning stiffness, disability and pain, though it didn't affect the course of the disorder.

Due to the role of Pantothenic Acid in the adrenal gland, it is often advocated as a supplement to help the body cope with stress. There is no strong evidence however, to back up this recommendation.

Pantothenic Acid has been tested for the relief of itching in dermatitis, respiratory disorders and allergies, and to help control nerve impairment in people with diabetes. There is still no evidence as to its effectiveness for these conditions.

Dosage

Most supplements suggest 10 to 100mg daily, but it is safe to take up to 500mg. B5 is usually sold as part of a B complex or multivitamin, on its own it is usually sold as calcium pantothenate.

Caution

Large doses may cause diarrhea.
